an update

Despite it being bedtime, I'm going to type something in this box, coz otherwise I dunno when I'll get to do it, plus it might be fun.

So a week ago on Saturday I went off to Gatwick to fly out to Plovdiv, Bulgaria. The flight out was relatively painless, and we'd arrived early enough to do some shopping and grab some food before the flight.

When we got to this tiny airport we found that weren't in fact going to Borovets, instead we were going to Pamporovo and would be staying in Hotel Zora.

Two or so hours later we arrived and quickly took our bags up to the room before going down for a late dinner that they'd sorted out for us. It was about 10pm local time, and they are 2 hours ahead so despite having 2 lunches (Macdonalds at the airport then plane food) we were hungry.

I'd heard from various sources that the food either wasn't of a good standard or was very plain, but from my experience this wasn't true, the food was mostly very good and nearly always interesting. Apart from the first night the meals were a buffet arrangement, the only downside was that as there weren't many guests they didn't refill the buffet things so, you had to get in early or miss out.

As for the skiing conditions, the weather was very variable - ranging from bright sunshine and blue skies on a couple of days, to rain, snow and even hail with thunder and lightening. The temperature crept up steadily after having jumped up from -7 to 1 degrees C on the first day, then 3,4 and then resting stubbornly on 5 degrees. This affected the pistes which were ok but a little icy on the first day, they varied from very nicely groomed sugar like quality to icy, slushy, and also there were more and more bare patches showing through on some less well used runs.
As for the runs themselves they were limited in the extreme. There were only 9 runs in total. We did 7 of these as one you had to cross a road and the other I couldn't work out where it was so we either did it or didn't do it.
Here's the piste map (The yellow bits are cross country runs):

Overall the holiday was good but I suspect we won't bother going back to Bulgaria, although having seen the other resort that would have been much better with double the number of runs.

The return trip wasn't quite so smooth with a 2 and 1/2 hour delay and arriving 2 hours late to Gatwick. Means I didn't get home till after 1am.

Returning to work has been difficult, but I'm looking forward to the weekend of roleplaying.
